Typography Design

Known throughout the world as a prolific type foundry, House Industries has made a considerable impact on the world of design. House Industries fonts scream from billboards, wish happy whatever from tens of thousands of greeting cards, serve as the basis for consumer product logos and add elements of style to a wide range of mainstream media. In their illustrious career, House artists have mastered a large cross-section of design disciplines. Their typography deftly melds cultural, musical and graphic elements. From early forays into distressed digital alphabets to sophisticated type and lettering systems, House Industries’ work transcends graphic conventions and reaches out to a broad audience. What Made Steve Jobs So Great?

Steve Jobs wasn't an engineer or a designer. But he was one of the greatest users of technology of all time, and that made all the difference. His tour finally brought him to the workbench of a designer ready to quit after just a year on the job, languishing amid a stack of prototypes. Among them was monolithic monitor with a teardrop swoop, which managed to integrate all of a computer's guts into a single package. In that basement Jobs saw what middle managers did not. He saw the future. And almost immediately he told the designer, Jonathan Ive, that from here on out they'd be working side-by-side on a new line. Steve Jobs may not be the greatest technologist or engineer of his generation. But he is perhaps the greatest user of technology to ever live, and it was Apple's great fortune that he also happened to be the company's founder. Read from fastcodesign here

Steve Jobs quits as Apple CEO, hands reins to Tim Cook

Steve Jobs resigned as chief executive of Apple on Wednesday and passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook, saying he could no longer fulfil the duties in a stunning announcement that raised fears his health has deteriorated further.

Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionised the technology arena with the iPhone and the iPad in the past four years, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that recently briefly became the most valuable in America.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," Jobs, who becomes chairperson, said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.

The letter and a separate terse, somewhat cryptic statement from Apple raised more questions than it answered about Jobs' health and the future of the company.

While it's unlikely that his departure as CEO will derail Apple's ambitious product-launch roadmap in the near term, there are concerns about whether the company would be as creative beyond the next year or so without its founder and visionary at the helm.

That is why Apple's stock dropped as much as 7% in after-hours trading when Jobs' departure was announced.

The Art of the Factory

For his new project, Err, artist Jeremy Hutchison contacted various factories around the world, and asked if one of their workers would produce an 'incorrect' version of the product they make every day: in doing so, the functional objects became artworks.
"I asked them to make me one of their products, but to make it with an error," Hutchison explains. "I specified that this error should render the object dysfunctional. And rather than my choosing the error, I wanted the factory worker who made it to choose what error to make. Whatever this worker chose to do, I would accept and pay for."

The Basics of Typography

Typography is a central component of design. It gives us an understanding of the heritage behind our craft. It’s one of the primary ways we, as a society, pass on information to others. Imagine a website, a magazine or even TV without text. Typography is a subject that raises passions and it can become a consuming obsession. If this subject is relatively new to you, or perhaps something you want to know more about, then this guide can start you on that journey.

Alphabetical

Alphabetical wines is created by winemakers who surf and surfers who make wines. "It's a wine made with so many variable, it's almost like the whole Alphabet!" We love the used of one color application to counter balance the richness of the illustrated frame.

"Alphabetical came from a decision to break the rules, We didn't want to make a single-varietal wine or a classic blend and we weren't fussed with areas of origin. Heck, we don't even have our own estate, let alone a hundred years of heritage. But we did want to make something we wanted a drink that was different. A wine that is voluptuous yet drinkable, impressive yet affordable. A serious wine, but one you can pour for aficionados as much as novices. A wine that is truly distinctive in package and memorable in taste. Which is exactly what we believe Alphabetical to be. "

Candy Land by IxD

The 2011 Btech IxD students completed their Arduino training with a collective project which was on display for a short moment on the Graphic Design Floor.
Chain reaction was the concept which showcases how interaction design is not all about going to the carnival, but it is about social relationships, our efforts to think and do things together - in another words "building an experience". Each team had to build a 3D element around the theme "Candyland" by combining a digital element which was "ARDUINO" in order to keep the ball in motion to the very end. All pieces together created a gravity fed sequence of reactions, which included lights, lifts, rails and finally, those candy balls.
You can find out more about Arduino here.
I also encourage all students in this project to please comment below.

Supporting the Karoo fracking is just plain wrong. Here's why.

"If we damage our limited water supply?and fracking will do just that?we will have conflict again here in South Africa. Look around the world. Wherever you damage the environment you have conflict."
Although this is really lengthy read is covers the subject matter really well. It is worth your while reading the comments at the end of the lengthy article and the responses from the author Donald Paul. Please read the knowtoneed post below this for a descripton of fracking with a video included.
Either way get on with reading the lengthy article at The Daily Maverick

What the FRACK!

What is fracking and what are people talking about with Shell and the Karoo.

From Hydraulic Fracturing Facts

About Hydraulic Fracturing
Hydraulic fracturing, commonly referred to as fracking, is a proven technological advancement which allows natural gas producers to safely recover natural gas from deep shale formations. This discovery has the potential to not only dramatically reduce our reliance on foreign fuel imports, but also to significantly reduce our national carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and accelerate our transition to a carbon-light environment. Simply put, deep shale gas formation development is critical to America's energy needs and economic renewal.
Experts have known for years that natural gas deposits existed in deep shale formations, but until recently the vast quantities of natural gas in these formations were not thought to be recoverable. Today, through the use of hydraulic fracturing, combined with sophisticated horizontal drilling, extraordinary amounts of deep shale natural gas from across the United States are being safely produced.
Hydraulic fracturing has been used by the natural gas and oil industry since the 1940s and has become a key element of natural gas development worldwide. In fact, this process is used in nearly all natural gas wells drilled in the U.S. today. Properly conducted modern hydraulic fracturing is a safe, sophisticated, highly engineered and controlled procedure.

Infographic: Which Countries Are Most Reliant on Libya for Oil?

As unrest continues to mount and conflict rages on in Libya, questions surrounding the North African nation's oil exports remain in the air. The international Energy Agency said in March 2011 that the country's oil production has "slowed to a trickle" as the fighting has prompted international companies to halt their operations and close ports.

What does this mean for the countries that receive shares of Libya's typical daily output? Here's a breakdown of which ones depend most on the turbulent but oil-rich nation.

Photographic Exhibition: Billy Monk - Nightclub Photographs

Michael Stevenson is pleased to present a selection of 47 images by the legendary photographer
Billy Monk taken in Cape Town nightclubs in 1967-9.
The unusual narrative of his life and work has often been related and embellished upon,

and has become entwined with our perceptions of the images. In essence, he was born in 1937,
and worked as a nightclub bouncer for Les Catacombs Club in Cape Town in the late 1960s
when he was around 30 years of age. He later moved to the West Coast and lived in Port Nolloth
periodically until his death in 1982.

An Executed Convict Returns to Life, in Mind Blowing 3-D Light Paintings

Source Data for Photography/12:31 from Croix Gagnon on Vimeo.

The jaw-dropping "Project 12:31" visually reconstructs the body of an executed convict who donated his body to science.
Yes, 3-D light painting -- in which a flat glowing image is traced through the air to form a quasi-3D version captured in long-exposure photographs -- is an amazingly creative hack. But Croix Gagnon and Frank Schott have taken the technique to a truly mindblowing -- and emotionally affecting -- level with Project 12:31. Their own description can't be topped: "In 1993, a convicted murderer was executed. His body was given to science, segmented, and photographed for medical research. In 2011, we used photography to put it back together."

Infographic of the Day: The Facebook Map of the World

This one began with profile data from a scant 10 million people -- or about 2% of Facebook's users. Butler first tabulated the number of friends between each city, and what latitude and longitude each friend was at. Then, he created a color code: The more connections between two places, the lighter the line is; the fewer, the darker. What emerged, of course, is a map of the world unlike any other. That is, it's not a map of roads or internet connections or airplane routes -- but a map of human relationships. Our physical geography is simply an emergent quality.
