A Showcase of Creatively Redesigned Movie Posters

Being a designer is a never-ending quest. Designers must constantly improve and expand their skills, as trends in design are always changing. Like any art susceptible to the whims of fashion, design reflects the tastes, values and concerns of a certain point in time, and as such it never sits still for too long.

A Creative Catharsis

Ireland's creative community got together to release a lot of pent up anger and sadness through the medium of the A3 poster, all in aid of Temple Street Children's Hospital.

Ad creatives, designers, animators, directors, illustrators and more took time out to dress up their favourite worst feedback from clients, transforming quotes that would normally give you a twitch, into a diverse collection of posters.

The work was exhibited by the kind folks at The Little Green Café, Bar and Gallery. The exhibition ran from November
2nd - 7th, with A3 prints of all entries selling for only €10 apiece, with all proceeds going to Temple Street.

After receiving an unbelievable amount of support and interest we've finished taking orders on prints. However feel free to drop us a line at verysharpsuits@gmail.com.

You can find them here.

Open the Door into the Science of Color Theory

Color theory is a vast and complicated sphere of knowledge. It consists of different scientific elements, such as: optics, spectroscopy, human anatomy and physiology, psychology, art history and theory, philosophy, ethics, architecture theory, design and many other applied sciences. In this article we will show only the schemes of harmonic color combinations and the examples of their usage by a bunch of talented vector artists.

Art Exhibition - Motel7

Motel7: Daydreamers -
Solo Exhibition at 34FineArt, Cape Town

16 October 2012 - 10 November 2012

After her initial solo exhibition,Tears and Castles, at 34 Long Fine Art in 2009, Motel7 left South Africa to work in Europe and America. Having returned to South Africa she has reclaimed her position on the streets and in the Gallery environment.

After working in traditional mediums from an early age, Motel7 has moved through the ranks of graffiti to street art and like many international artists, such as Banksy, Mr. Brainwash, Miss Van, Blek le Rat, D*Face and Nick Walker, she has secured her position as an acclaimed urban contemporary artist. Since then her work has been featured in numerous international exhibitions, including the Basel Art Fairs, as well as galleries in Amsterdam and Los Angeles. Motel7 continues to hone her skills in urban spaces whenever and wherever the opportunity presents itself.

Increasingly street artists occupy both urban and fine art environments. In cities like Cape Town, where street art is still illegal, artworks seldom remain on the walls for long enough to be fully appreciated before being cleaned off or defaced. Ironically, while the value of works in urban spaces is often overlooked, within the gallery environment these same works are approached with a more appreciative eye.

Daydreamers, Motel7’s second solo show, affirms the ease with which she straddles the divide between urban and gallery spaces - where the traditional process of work progressing from gallery environment to museum or public commission, is reversed. The exhibition is presented in her unique visual idiom, built-up over years of working in a challenging environment. The seemingly juxtaposed images of sculls, toys, fruit and sweets are complimented by the vintage quality of the paintings… it's all about symbolizing daydreaming and nostalgia and the past.

Street art and graffiti are closely associated, but are often regarded as vandalism - evidence of urban decay - in stark contrast to gallery art, which is seen as the epitome of artistic achievement. Daydreamers demonstrates that it is not these works themselves which are different, but rather the contexts within which they are viewed.

Don’t miss the opening reception on 16 October 18h34.

World Chess Identity - Pentagram

World Chess identity designed by John Rushworth.
At the end of last year, entrepreneur Andrew Paulson acquired the rights to the World Chess Championship. He asked Pentagram to re-enoble chess by branding the pinnacle of chess; giving the World Chess Championship an identity, campaign and experience that could restore its reputation as a contest between the world’s greatest minds and capture the interest of a new generation.
Partners John Rushworth, Daniel Weil and Naresh Ramchandani first created a system of names. They named Paulson’s organisation World Chess, reflecting the World Chess Championship and chess as a world game. This led to a system of names for each competition: World Chess Championship, World Chess Blitz Championship, World Chess Junior Championship, and so on.
With the names in place, they chose to bring World Chess alive through the qualities of intelligence and intensity; the exceptional intelligence needed to process every possibility and permutation that can play out across the sixty four squares, and the heightened intensity of winning or losing a contest against a mind that proves itself to be superior or inferior to your own.

Harriet Stockwell - a social approach to sustainability in Africa

I recently graduated from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Graphic Design. I am an enthusiastic 22 year old geared to making positive changes through design. The Eco Design Initiative changed my whole outlook on design. All that was taught to me about design being 'sell sell sell a product', has now changed to make 'change change change in people's lives'. Design is possibly the most powerful tool to change minds, lives and living. If Design thinking is just powered in the right direction, positive social upliftment and innovation could sprout up all over the world. It is the simple idea that is the most effective and what the Eco Design Initative Challenge taught me was the best way to get that simple idea is to involve those whom you designing for. Design for me used to be an inward perspective but it is now an outward approach. Design is not about the Designer, it is about the people whom you design for. Africa is the greatest place to begin to design for social upliftment and innovation. Africa is so rich in design, it just needs a little guidance in the right direction.

Africa is in me, it is in my home, it is in my community. I was not born in Africa neither am I a South African citizen but I have only ever known what it is to be African. Africa is my home, it is my teacher, it is who I am. Whenever I come home from traveling overseas and I see Table Mountain I know I am home. Hearing an African accent while overseas makes me feel close to home. Africa is a beat, a vibe, an energy that flows through every single on of us that live here. It is what connects us and makes us African. It is that connection that should fuel design in Africa. Design can eradicate that which was left by the colonial powers and the apartheid era if everyone is involved. Community is key in designing and if design had to focus on social upliftment and innovation with the involvement of the community one is designing for, then Africa could be a sustainable rich continent. The theme Africa in me relates to who I am, how I design and who I design with. I would like to share my experience with the Eco Design Initiative challenge as well as my own personal thoughts relating to the theme Africa in Me at TEDxYouth@CapeTown.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

4 Loves & 1 Hate at WWDC

Apple. The name has become synonymous with good design. But it’s also had a few missteps in recent years. Skeuomorphism is taking the place of clean interfaces. At today’s WWDC, Apple shared details of new MacBook Pros, the next OSX Mountain Lion, and iOS 6, all of which will be available by July. Here’s what we loved and what we hated. Click here.

IN-EI BY ISSEY MIYAKE FOR ARTEMIDE

IN EI by Issey Miyake for Artemide

IN-EI is a new collection of table, floor, and hanging lamps by fashion designer Issey Miyake for the Italian lighting manufacturer Artemide. Born from the 132 5. ISSEY MIYAKE project in which clothing can be folded flat but also become a three-dimensional form, Miyake and his research team Reality Lab. naturally transitioned into lighting. The fixture’s material is made from recycled PET plastic bottles and diffuses light beautifully. “IN-EI” is Japanese for shadow, and with the pleating of the material each lamp becomes a striking sculpture when lit.

Watch The World’s First Shoppable Music Video

Music videos have come a long, long way since back when The Buggles and their new wave aesthetic killed the radio star. Ssense, a luxury retail company based out of Montreal, has recently introduced what they’re billing as the “world’s first interactive shoppable music video.” And yup, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. I Think She Ready features Diplo, FKi, and Iggy Azalea all decked out and styled in brands and items carried by the site, while WireWax technology, which enables users to tag videos in essentially the same way they would a Facebook post, makes the "interactive shoppable" part possible.

Many thanks fastcodesign

Watch A Tiny Rube Goldberg Machine That Makes Postcards

Rube Goldberg Machines complete a simple task in the most inefficient way possible. They tend to be sprawling contraptions that can take days to set up for a single “run.” Not so with Melvin, the world’s smallest Rube Goldberg machine, who is currently traveling the world in a suitcase.
Melvin is smart: he geo-locates himself using GPS, documents his audience with his built-in smartphone camera, and talks about his “runs” on Facebook and Twitter. After each successful run, he spits out a stamped postcard that reads “wish you were here.”

HELSINKI: World Design Capital 2012 - NOW!

WDC2012

The news came on 25 November 2009: Helsinki had been appointed the World Design Capital for 2012. From the start, our application had emphasised openness, continuity, collaboration and the social dimensions of design. These same themes remain the basis for all our activities.

While there are many awards that recognise individual accomplishments in design, the World Design Capital (WDC) designation is unique as it aims to focus on the broader essence of design’s impact on urban spaces, economies and citizens.
The World Design Capital initiative promotes and supports the cultural, social and financial uses of design. The title is assigned every other year by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid).
Like every city in the world, Helsinki exists for its people. An enjoyable urban culture is the result of many factors, perhaps the most important of which is openness. The concept of Open Helsinki is literal – a city where information, ideas, thoughts and people can move freely without unnecessary creativity-hampering obstacles.
Design can be old or new; large or small. Pretty or controversial. Visible or invisible. Design often also has a social or public dimension. For example public transport, municipal and private health care, political systems or schooling would not work without proper design.
The term 'embedded design' is one of our points of departure. It means expanding the realm of design from products to various systems and public services such as healthcare. Embedded design also focuses on taking users' needs into account from the very initial phase of design.

The Pringles Package Sucks. This Chip Can Blooms Into A Bowl

Young designer Dohyuk Kwon encountered the same problem we all have before: He was enjoying a package of Pringles potato crisps until, suddenly, he found the chip level had sunk to a critical expletive-laden stage just below the reach of his fingers. “So I sketched a more convenient package of chips,” he tells Co.Design.
