The Beauty of Knitting
Where does the beauty come from? It isn’t necessary to travel around the world in its most quiet places to experience it. Beauty is always near us — you just need to want to explore it. And you can of course create it with your own hands and imagination: just a couple of movements with a knitting needle and a ball of thread suddenly turns into something remarkable, something that exists nowhere else in the world. And once you’ve created it, it will remain a unique and inexhaustible source of further inspiration. Also, it will warm your heart and your spirit every time you see it, as the scarves that our moms and grand-moms knitted in good old days.
Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Typeface
1. Because it works.
2. Because you like its history.
3. Because you like its name.
4. Because of who designed it.
5. Because it was there.
6. Because they made you.
7. Because it reminds you of something.
8. Because it's beautiful.
9. Because it's ugly.
10. Because it's boring.
11. Because it's special.
12. Because you believe in it.
13. Because you can't not.
Michael Bierut's article on Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Typeface expands on the 13 "ways" mentioned above. It is worth your while reading further through the comments below the article to see what others have to say.

WTF Media Conference offers a student discount.
WTF! Social Media has gone main stream. What does this mean? At WTF Media Conf we will explore social media, mobile media and cloud computing – the three big trends for 2010. According to Jesse Schell, “Facebook, a social networking site, is big, strange and terrifying or rather unexpected.” (BTW, Facebook had more hits than Google for the second week in March, 2010.)
Online or Mobile, Social Media is changing the way we live, work today and will continue to do so in the future. If you want to know more about what’s coming and how to use it, then you are in the right place. WTF Media Conf will focus on knowledge and application (case studies) and of course, life would not be complete without the crystal ball, a couple of predictions.
The conference, organised by CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology), comprises two components: Boot Camp and WTF Media Conf. Boot Camp is a mixture of knowledge, skills development and practice for the novice or beginner.
With the presentation of a valid and current student /academic staff card you will be able to attend the conference, _ but with the understanding that you might not get more than a programme and food (maybe no goodie bag) we can keep the price at a little less than cost - R1000.00 per university delegate. Please note: This is on a first come, first serve basis - which means we might have to limit this offer.
The Yike Bike
YikeBike is a statement about using smart technology to solve the problems of our increasingly congested, polluted, stressful cities. It is the first commercial expression of the mini-farthing concept, created up by a bunch of successful entrepreneurs, engineers and dreamers. We sat down to try and answer:
- What is the simplest way to get from A to B with the aid of a machine?
- What is the smallest wheel you can have to get a stable, safe, comfortable ride?
- Can you make something small enough to be able to go with you anywhere in a city?
- Wonder if we could make a unicycle dramatically easier to ride and fold?
We were intrigued by creating something that could dramatically change urban transport, enabling city dwellers a fast, safe and easy way to navigate their environment.
The result was the mini-farthing concept and its first expression, the YikeBike. It employs state-of-the-art technology, engineering and industrial design to create a new class of personal transport.
More on the history of the development of the concept can be found at www.minifarthing.comSaturday, 10 April 2010

Culture on display at Spier Contemporary
The 2010 Spier Contemporary Exhibition is currently happening at the Cape Town City Hall at the Parade. On display is this (typographic) piece by Brett Murray. Make more sense of it here as well as more information on the exhibition and times. Entrance is free and for afters I headed down to the Indian Curry Mall closer to Adderly Street on the left - well worth the experience. I had the butter chicken, a generous portion served with lank rice and some lentil 'ding' for a mere R30 - smaak it spicey!
