CPUT FID DI Stand 2010

The CPUT Faculty of Informatics and Design 2010 DI Stand drew major interest at the opening of this years Design Indaba Expo. Students from the Product and Graphic Design Departments designed and constructed the stand in record time. The main material was xanita board, which is a stronger new look corrugated cardboard, able to be shaped and worked to produce the stand. Various design items were displayed around the stand as well as visuals on two iMacs which produced an energetic display of what the faculty has on offer. Students from the departments and the PR department informed interested parties over the three days to sign up for the new year at Cape Towns leading Design Institution. Kudos all round for all who focused their attention toward the stand over the weeks leading up to the expo.
The video above shows some of the intricate typographic detail that was achieved with the xanita board.

Design Movies at the Labia

There are some inspiring movies screening at the Labia this week. They are design based and in conjunction with the 2010 Design Indaba and Expo. This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity to view a collection of movies in this genre in one week. There will be no demonstration of how to 'glitter a ham' at any of the showings - you had to be there!

The first open presentation to students - keynote

A GD Digital Tutor, Adam Weston, is seen demonstrating the presentation application Keynote. Keynote is compared to Microsoft Powerpoint only a whole lot better - and that's a fact! It is available on all Imacs in all Studios for your use. Watch the Welcome to Keynote intro under the Keynote Help drop down menu to get you going. If you using Powerpoint after you have discovered Keynote you have a problem.

Workstations of Designers

Ever wondered what designers work on. Is it mac or pc? In an amazing designed studio? Are the workstations better than what you studied on at college. Its always surprising what can be achieved with the basics in technology. Either way Mac Rocks!!!!!!

Go have a look at some of these rigs.

Brilliant Logo Solutions

Go and have a look at these brilliant logo solutions. We never to old to be inspired. What impresses me is that even with new printing technologies making cmyk printing cheaper than spot colours, designers still choose to use one and two colour logo solutions. Click here thanks to Abduzeedo.

Live skype link up with TIE on Day 1

Day one got off to a promising start with the TIE student sessions. Cape Town Groups were decided and the students soon got down to conceptualizing their first assignment. The afternoon was mainly spent with setting up their Skype link up with their respective 'partners' over in the UK who. We were all amazed to see the size of the UK group when the webcam was turned to face them - a big WOW was heard in the tightly packed Room 3.18. Tomorrow the students kick off, after a cup of coffee, with making visual contact with the UK students and proceed with sharing ideas over the hemispheres. Here's to a great initiative all round. Have a look at the images to the right in the Flickr Photostream of the groups in day one or Click here.
